Geocaching
I wanted to start off with a topic that hits on a lot of key things when looking for something to do. First off it"s FREE, it's easy, kid and family oriented and most times less than a mile from where you are right now! Any one can do this. No need to be a skilled seasoned outdoor veteran to take geocaching. It's very simple, in under five minuets you can go from reading this, to finding local unknown treasures with your kids and have a great story to tell by dinner time.
If you were like me and had no idea about geocaching you're not alone.Below I shared a quick information video from their website to help get a grasp of the concept. Its a small treasure hunts for hidden "caches" all over the place. By use of your smart phone you can download their free app and be on the hunt, just like that. If not by phone, find any means of the internet and go to http://www.geocaching.com. Use a gps system or get all old school and try to find them with a map and compass. "crickets chirp"
Any who, most of the time there's a log book inside you can sign plus some small things for kids inside. Perhaps plan on bringing some things to add to a cache for someone else to enjoy finding. This can also show the act of random giving to kids. I have found some larger caches along trail systems with more camping based items such as food or gear. Along with larger log books to write your trip experience on that corresponding trail. Overall it's just a great activity that you can do from home, or across the country on vacation to make memories and interact with each other. Or to simply create a conversation all while enjoying the great outdoors.
